Thomas M. Mettler, 80 years old, of Palm Beach, FL died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Born in Circleville, OH on July 14, 1932, he was the son of Melvin DeLong and Evelyn Byers Mettler. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sarah "Sally" Vierck Mettler; and their four children: Beth Mettler Veres, her husband Richard and their children, Sarah (Adam), Andrew, Charles, Grace and Elizabeth; Sarah Jane Mettler Cecil, her husband Jack and their children, Thomas, Hugh, John and Owen; Thomas DeLong Mettler; and Christopher John Mettler, his wife Kate and their children, Lucy, Molly, Grady, and Herbert. Additional survivors include his twin sister, Constance Mettler Satterfield and sister, Susan Mettler Allen (Rick); and several nieces and nephews.Tom received a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce and a Law degree from The Ohio State University
where he served as president of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Following graduation, Tom worked for Williamson, Gunster, and Baugher, the first Law Firm in the Town of Palm Beach, later partnering with Baugher in 1962 to form Baugher & Mettler, which operates today as Mettler, Randolph, Massey, Carroll & Sterlacci. He specialized in estate law and practiced in the Town of Palm Beach for over 50 years. His peers placed him in a league of his own when it came to integrity, honor, congeniality, graciousness, and morals.Tom was a member on the Town Council for many years and served as it's President in 1981 and 1982. He was also a Municipal Judge for the Town of Palm Beach. He was a former Director of the First National Bank of Palm Beach and the Atlantic National Bank; and served on the Boards of the Good Samaritan Hospital, The Rehabilitation Center for Children and Adults (formerly The Crippled Children Society), and the Palm Beach Civic Association. A longtime member of Bethesda-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, Tom served as a Clerk Chancellor, member of the Vestry, and Usher. Tom was known as a tireless advocate for his clients and community, but will be long remembered for his love of family, loyalty to friends, and tremendous sense of humor.The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 14, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 1201 South Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. A Funeral Service will be held at one o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 15, at the Royal Poinciana Chapel, 60 Cocoanut Row, Palm Beach, FL with Dr. Robert Norris, Pastor, officiating. The family will also receive friends in fellowship immediately following the Service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Thomas M.
