POWELL, William W. "Bill"

William W. "Bill" Powell, 76, passed away on October 24, 2013, in Palm Beach, FL. He was born in Woodbury, NJ and raised in Haverford, PA and Buffalo, NY. He attended Amherst Central High in Snyder, NY and went on to become a very proud son of Princeton, graduating Magna Cum Laude, Political Science, in 1959. Bill spent his time between New York City, Palm Beach, Sandisfield, MA and Santa Fe, NM. The majority of Bill's career was with the Colgate - Palmolive Company which contributed to making him a man of the world, a renaissance man. He spoke French and Italian fluently and lived at various times in his life in London, Paris, Zurich, Milan, St. Jean Cap Ferrat, Boston and New York. Bill retired from Colgate in 1985 as Senior Executive Vice President, having served in various management positions as Chief of R&D, President of Colgate - Italy, and President of The Kendall Company. During this period Bill was a member of the Young Presidents Organization, The Commercial Club of Boston, The Longwood Cricket Club, The American Egyptian Chamber of Commerce and The Wianno Club. Bill's later careers took him to the United Nations Development Program and INSEAD, in France. Most recently, he was a member of the University Club, The Princeton Club, The Sailfish Club of Florida and a Board member for 15 Years of the Palm Beach Zoo. Bill was an energetic, world traveler who loved good food, wine, and conversation as well as his alma mater, family and friends. A voracious reader, he was always interested in the news of the day, politics and the latest movies. Bill was a good and generous friend and we will miss his intelligent input, keen wit and zest for life. He is survived by his wife and partner of 30 years, Joanne Paladino; his sister, Maryanne Powell Jones, her husband; Bob; of Vienna; VA and their family. He also leaves his many great and good friends, Colgate pals, cousins and extended family. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Saint James Episcopal Church, 71 Street and Madison Avenue, New York, NY. The family requests no flowers and donations in his memory may be sent to Palm Beach Zoo, Presidents Office, 1301 Summit Boulevard, West Palm Beach, FL 33405.
