Charles Massey Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

CHARLES RUSSELL MASSEY Charles Russell Massey, Ph. D., Boynton Beach resident, passed away peacefully at his home on March 23, 2012. Born in Indianapolis, IN on June 5, 1947 and raised in Lantana, Charles served in the United States Army as second lieutenant. He received his doctorate in criminology from Florida State University and recently retired after 32 years as Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University. During his tenure, he was also department chair and founded the New Pines Project established to provide crime prevention programs for at-risk youths. Charles was the eldest of six children born to Maxine and Bud Massey. For 25 years, he was the beloved husband of Cara Gallo Massey and proud father of Dylan Charles Massey. Charles will be forever remembered by his devoted sisters, Mary Massey Howarth and Helen Massey Norman. He is also remembered by loving family members: Bianca and Don Pucci; Dina and Ron Tarro; Al and Hisayo Gallo, Michael Norman; Rick Howarth, Debbie and Dino Gallo; Cecilia Gallo and several nieces and nephews. He is missed by his faithful dog, Pickles, and countless other friends, family and students who were blessed to have been a part of his life. Charles had a love of Islamorada, the ocean, nature, fishing, reading and took a proud interest in Dylan's baseball success from little league to The University of Chicago. Charles, although greatly missed, will always be found in the beauty of the setting sun, the scent of a warm gulf breeze, and the sound of the waves slapping against the hull... Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Charles' life on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 6:30 PM, Unity of Delray Beach, 101 NW 22 Street, Delray Beach, FL 33444. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33407. Their compassion toward Charles and his family will be forever cherished. To leave personal messages and condolences, please visit www.lorneandsons.com. Dear Cara & Dylan,
No words can express how sorry we are for your loss.
Having recently lost many loved people in our lives, we know the big hole you are feeling now.
Please know that our beloved ones never really leave, as they have a place in the hearts of those whom they loved.
As a father, he will never stop looking over Dylan's well being... and as a husband, he will make sure you, Cara, are always well.
Charles will always live in the things he loved and liked... And he will be smiling every time you both smile.
Harry and I will be thinking of you.

To Cara and Dylan-may you find some comfort in your grief knowing that Chuck is now at peace and suffers no more. His final battle is won.

All of us who wre touched by Chuck during his full but all too short lifetime will always be thankful for his influence. From the moment you first met him, you knew from his warm smile and easy demeanor that this was a friend. Only after you spent time with him did you realize his loyalty, his passion, and his dedication to those people and things that mattered most to him. He was a leader in many areas and easy to follow, admire, and give your best to and he'd inspire by example and straight shooting. I'm proud to have known him and been his friend and team mate as we were all becoming what we turned out to be.

This world is a better place because of Chuck and sadder now that he is gone.

Thank you for sending this email. Chuck grew up in Lantana Heights down the street from me. I remember him as a popular, very handsome young man. Recently I was looking at a Palm Beach Junior College yearbook, I think 1967 and remember noting his picture as student president. How young he looked and how nice he was in a leadership role. I am glad that his suffering is over. My condolences to his family. LInda Payne Koehn (class of '65 LWHS)

Mary, Helen, Cara, and Dylan,

I remember the fun I had playing at Chuck's house on Allison Avenue and going to the movies on Main Street in Speedway, IN. Chuck, Tom and I would chase each other and play as if we were cowboys in the “old west”, taking turns playing the villain and good guys. Those were the days! Miss you Chuck.

From the first time we met your family in Vero Beach, we knew that the three of you would be a great addition to the U Chicago baseball family. We were glad that Dylan got to come to Winter Haven this year and that he was with you when he needed to be. Dylan's baseball teammates will be there for him when he returns to Chicago

Dear Massey Family,
I never had the privilege of meeting Charles (Chuck?), but I was a good friend of his sister Sue Hammond/Harris from the time we were both brides in June of 1967 until her sad passing. Sue and I were Respiratory Therapists at Bethesda Memorial Hospital and later at Doctors Hospital where Nancy was employed also. Many, many years have passed but Susie is still in my heart. And she was so in awe of her big brother! My husband also remembers how proud she was of his accomplishments, as was Maxine who worked in the hospital arena with us, too. I mostly remember Mary and "their baby sister" Helen and last saw them at the Unity Church for Sue's service. Please remember me to Mary and Helen. I am sorry not to have known Chuck, but I am smiling in remembrance of the joy that he added to Sue's life. My condolences to the family.

Dr. Massey was one of my professors at FAU. He was a dedicated teacher and I remember many afternoons where he would sit and talk with me after class in the breezeway to talk about our shared passion: criminal justice. He will be truly missed by the community but I will always remember him as an inspiration.
