Raymond LISS Obituary

LISS, Raymond Lawrence
"Larry"
With joy and tears the Liss family celebrates the life and passing of Raymond Lawrence "Larry" Liss of North Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Crown Point, Indiana. On December 12, 2016 at the age of 75, he went on to glory surrounded by loved ones. Larry, the loving leader of his family, is survived by his wife Carolyn of 19 years, his two children, Blair Liss and Taryn Turner, grandchildren Judah, Wyatt and Shale, sister Sue Ellen and brothers Tom and Jim Liss. Larry was born in Gary, Indiana in 1941 to his parents Raymond and Bernice Liss. In accordance with his affectionate character, he acted as father and grandfather to Carolyn's three children and eight grandchildren. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Larry was inducted into the university's athletic hall of fame in 2013 for his participation on the varsity basketball team in the years 1959-1963. His great skill as a captain and point guard contributed to several record setting seasons and a personal free throw shooting record that held for over 50 years. As his teammates became lifelong friends, he cherished the memories of these seasons for the remainder of his life, often narrating with joy the exact details of many key games. He was a co-founder of the educational non-profit organization, Academic Games Leagues of America. As an integral part of Academic Games, serving the organization for over 50 years, he touched the lives of countless students through his passionate pursuit of academic excellence. His resolve to develop students' character, integrity, and work ethic made him a champion for education and inspiration for educators nationwide. In step with his passion for education, Larry worked as a member of the Palm Beach County School board for more than 30 years, retiring in 2003. At the recommendation of his peers and in honor of his dedication to excellence in education, Larry was distinguished alongside a Nobel Prize winner with a Public Service Award from the University of Chicago in 2013. Larry and Carolyn have been residing in North Palm Beach, Florida since 1999. A memorial service and reception will be held at Christ Fellowship's south campus at 5312 Northlake Blvd, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 33418 on Friday, December 16, 2016 at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Larry's honor can be made to one of his favorite organizations, Bright Hope International, a Christian missions organization which serves the poor and vulnerable across the globe. Donations can be made at (www.brighthope.org).

I regret that I am unable to join you for the celebration of Larry's life of accomplishment! Countless youngsters were shaped into fine thinkers and people of integrity because of his efforts. May you each be comforted by sweet memories and the assurance of heaven. Peace and comfort to each of his loved ones.

I worked with Larry at the Palm Beach County School District. Larry was a wonderful person, spiritual leader of his home and an all around first class guy!
As much as we'll miss him, I'm sure the Lord will have plenty for him to do in Heaven.

Doug Judie Doug Margo Caleb and Grace Turner celebrate with you that Larry is at peace and home with the Lord. We are grateful to have known him and will love on his beloved daughter, Taryn, and grandboys, Judah and Wyatt, for him. We will pray for Carolyn, Blair and Taryn...and all who will miss Larry's wisdom and kindness. We were honored to remember Larry and his educational contributions with a donation to Samaritan's Purse and their work as they teach children in desperate situations to read and write.
With love! The Turner Family
