Claude Kirk Obituary
Claude Kirk, who in 1966 became the first Republican elected governor in Florida since Reconstruction, has died. He was 85.

Gov. Rick Scott issued a statement today saying, "Ann and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Governor Kirk. He will be remembered as Florida's first Republican governor since Reconstruction and a strong, outspoken and capable leader for our state during an era of immense change in our country. Along with all Floridians, we send our condolences to his wife Erika and their entire family. Our prayers are with them during this challenging time."

Governor Scott will order flags to fly at half-staff on the day of Governor Kirk's funeral.

Kirk, a West Palm Beach resident, had a heart attack in January but said at the time, "It's nothing important. It's all over. They did a good job and I'm up and at 'em."

Kirk who was governor from 1967 to 1971, said he was treated at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Riviera Beach and at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis.
