Samuel BRASS Obituary

BRASS, Samuel Yale
Samuel Yale Brass, 89, a long-time resident of Admiral's Cove, Jupiter, FL and beloved member of the Kennebunkport, ME, community, passed away suddenly and peacefully on May 28, 2015. Yale was Senior Captain for American Airlines for 32 years. He proudly served as a Commander in the US Navy in WW II, during the Cuban Crisis and the Korean War. He attended Bates College before WW II and graduated from Boston University in business. Yale loved sports and was a devoted Red Sox fan, member of Arundel Lodge #76 AF & AM, New York Athletic Club, Kennebunk River Club, and The Club at Admiral's Cove. Yale genuinely loved people. He wanted to know about you and your life, because he valued conversation and lasting relationships. He leaves behind a legacy of love and his wife of 30 years Adele. They shared their 'bonus life' spending time in both Kennebunkport, ME and Jupiter, FL; enjoying travel, the arts, reading, gardening, and most importantly family, friends and beloved pets. Yale's legacy also includes step-daughters Beth (Bob) Mandel and Karen (Scott) Goodfellow; grandchildren Andrea (Brett) Rosenberg, Robyn (Noah) Rice, Maggie (Brandon) Woodland and Lish (Whitney) Harris; and 8 great-grandchildren Nathan & Benji Rosenberg, Ethan & Jack Rice, Alyse & Grace Woodland, Yale & Brooklyn Harris; brother Simm; and companion dog Rosie. A period of visitation will be held 3 to 4:30PM Sunday, May 31, 2014, with a time of remembrance and sharing of memories at 4:30 PM at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, ME. My heartfelt condolences to Sam's family. I will miss the wonderful conversations we always had at The monthly Grey Eagles luncheons down here in Florida. Sam always had a great story to tell. If you wanted American Airlines history or APA history, Sam was the guy to ask. Sam was a good friend, an excellent pilot, and an amazing leader. He gave so much of himself in service to his fellow pilots. He will be sorely missed.

On 29 December 1969, I boarded an AA flight from Newark to Dallas, as a brand new hire flight officer for American Airlines. Alerted by the gate agent that a new hire was on the flight, Captain Sam Brass, in command, invited me to ride in the cockpit jump seat. The copilot on the flight was Brad Crockett; I don't remember the FE's name, but I will always remember the warm welcome I received from Sam as a new hire and at that moment I knew this was going to be a great career. Over the ensuing years we kept in touch and I always reminded him of that memorable journey. May he rest in peace.

Sam was always a great man and American Pilot to be around. Since I spend about 4-5 months in Vero Beach, FL each year, it was always great to see Sam and talk about old times at AAL when the AA pilots met for lunch in West Palm Beach, FL. He was the greatest and a good friend. Condolences to his family. He had a great life.
