Elsie Mirian Autio passed away peacefully at JFK Hospital in West Palm Beach on Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014. She was 90 years of age. Born in Gardner, Massachusetts on September 22, 1923, Elsie was the daughter of John and Amanda Holopainen. She is survived by brother. Edwin Holopainen of Glastonbury, Connecticut, daughter, Lauren Allen of St. Louis, Missouri, her husband, Dr. Joseph R. Allen, son Steven of Tukwila, Washington, and his wife Lenora. Elsie grew up on the family farm in Hubbardston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Athol High School as Valedictorian of her class and then attended Becker Junior College. She worked in a secterial position to the vice president of Paul Revere Life Insurance during the war years and after. In 1948, Elsie married Herbert Autio, lived in Worcester, Massachusetts, then moved to Fitchburg, Massachusetts. In 1959 the family moved to Rowe, Massachusetts where Herbert worked for Yankee Atomic Electric Company Elsie loved country life in Rowe and was an avid gardner, skier and outdoor enthusiast. When Herbert retired, they moved to Lantana, Florida. Elsie was proud of her Finnish ancestry and enjoyed researching the family genealogy. Lantana has a large Finnish community and during the winter, there were many Scandinavian events which she either participated in or just attended. Elsie was a member of the Boynton Beach Congregational United Church and the Finnish Tourist Club (Soumi Talo). She and her late husband, Herbert, had travelled to Finland and Europe on many occasions. She will be missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held at the Point Overlook Club House on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM. The address is 7275 East Oakridge Circle, Lantana, Florida 33462. following the service, there will be a reception.
