Obituary Condolences


Jean Banchet, age 72, passed away on November 24, 2013. Jean was born March 7, 1941 in Raonne, France. He is survived by his loving wife, Doris, a sister and brother-in-law, Monique and Henri Chassagne, a brother and sister-in-law, Lucien and Marianne Banchet, and other members of his family. This legendary and well known Chef founded Le Francais restaurant in Chicago, the Ciboulette and the Riviera in Atlanta. He also founded the Jean Banchet Awards for Culinary Excellence. Numerous articles and pieces in assorted International publications have featured Jean over the years, among them are: Bon Appetit, the Times Magazine, US News and World Report, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and Paris Match. He was elected to the fine Dining Hall of Fame, was rated 5 Stars in the Mobil Travel Guide and 5 Diamonds from AAA. In France, he won the Chef de I'Annee in 1976 and was granted the awards: Maitre Cuisinier, Medaille d'Or by I'Academie Culinaire de France-USA, the Ordre National du Metite in May 1981 and Chevalier du Merite Agricole in April 1984. Jean was enjoying a well-deserved retirement with Doris, his wife for 50 years, in Jupiter, Florida, where Jean indulged in his gastronomical dinners, his passion for cars, motorcycles, petanque and his devotion for his dogs. He was loved by many Americans as well as by his innumerable international friends and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his generosity, his dedication to fine cuisine and for his love for life. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 1:00pm at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1701 Indian Creek Parkway, Jupiter, FL 33458. After the service a reception will be held at the Aycock Riverside Funeral Home.
