KEMPTER, John Daniel

John Daniel Kempter, 83, passed away September 22nd, 2013. He was born in Astoria, Queens in 1930, son of Emily and Henry Kempter. Ever ambitious, his first job was selling cigars and cigarettes at a Mens' Club in Manhattan at the age of 14. After a short stint at CCNY, he found a job and a career at Royal Globe Insurance Company at 150 William Street, NYC. He started in the mail room, then "took care of 125 women in a secretarial pool" opening and closing windows (as appropriate). His mentor encouraged him to continue his education and he not only attended the College of Insurance but taught there for ten years. He retired in 1988 in Charlotte, NC as the V.P. of computer operations after 40 years of service. After 1988 he volunteered with S.C.O.R.E. for a year and then embarked on a wonderful life of travel with his wife of 26 years, Doris. John was an early member of C.P.C.U., receiving the designation September of 1954. He was on advisory boards for I.V.A.N.S., Fire and Casualty Discussion Groups and Good Will Industries Computer Training Program for the Disabled in Charlotte. John is survived by his wife, Doris; son Richard Kempter of Charlotte, NC; daughter Elizabeth Kempter of New York; three step-children Dr. Laura Mellick of Portland, OR; Greogry Mellick and Karen Allen of Rockland County, NY; three grandchildren Dr. John Kempter, Melissa Nau and Eric Kempter; and four great-granddaughters in Charlotte, NC. John is predeceased by his first wife Constance. John will be remembered as a religious man, a gentleman, and a gentle man with always a helping hand to those who needed one. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 PM on October 12th, 2013 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 7905 S.E. Federal Highway, Hobe Sound, Florida 33455. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Hospice of Palm Beach County or Bethel Lutheran.
