Leona Holder "Billie" AIN

Obituary Condolences

AIN, Leona "Billie" Holder

Leona "Billie" Holder Ain, age 97, died October 17, 2013 at Trinity Elms (was called Elms at Tanglewood). Leona was born March 16, 1916. She was born at home on Milhaven Road, Winston-Salem, NC to Rebecca Sophia Boose and Oscar Eugene Holder. She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers; Hazel Elizabeth Anderson of Winston-Salem, NC and Juanita Mae Gardner of Charlotte, NC; John Augustine Holder of Mooresville, NC and Dwight Wilbur Holder of Winston-Salem, NC, Oscar Edward Holder of Clemmons, NC and Myron Eugene Holder of Charlotte, NC. For more than thirty years Billie was a legendary figure on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, FL. She held numerous sales and management positions at Saks Fifth Avenue, Tapemeasure and Martha's where she was boutique manager when she retired in 1980. Billie enjoyed her role as a fashion arbiter but she seldom stayed within the social Parameters of her profession. Instead she befriended her clients, acting as a fashion advisor and family counselor, never moderating her opinions. Her cheerful, tidewater twang, only slightly muffled by the lush carpeting and brocade wallpaper, could be heard coming from a dressing room, "that looks wonderful, you have to buy it, believe me". Or "that looks terrible, take it off". On September 11, 1940, she married a Connecticut Yankee, Nathan Ain, who was disabled in World War II. After her husband returned from service in the Signal Corps they lived in Washington, DC for several years then they moved to Florida. For the next twenty years they wintered at their home in West Palm Beach, spending working summers in Southampton, Long Island, NY. Nat Ain was active in veteran's organizations including The Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 42, and the American Legion Post 12. Throughout her life, Billie Ain volunteered at the Veterans Administration clinic and after her husband's death in November of 1988, she became an auxiliary commander of the Disabled American Veterans, she also served as an officer of the American Legion Auxiliary and was active in Hospice and The City of Hope where she was lifetime member. Survivors include nieces, Rebecca Marie Holder St. Pierre of Charlotte, NC and Cynthia Ann Holder Grant of Winston-Salem, NC and nephews, Charles Robert Holder of Advance, NC and Timothy Day Holder of Savannah, GA. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 21, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Mizell-Faville-Zern Funeral Home 6411 Parker Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL. A Graveside Memorial Service at 11:00 AM at Hillcrest Memorial Park, adjacent to Mizell-Faville-Zern Funeral Home, will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2013. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, (HPBC) 5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407.
