Preston Hamilton Smith III, IT Analyst at The Scripps Research Institute, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at the Hospice of Palm Beach County following a brief battle with cancer. He was 51 and lived in Wellington. Born April 22, 1963, in Brooklyn, NY, Preston spent most of his school years on the North Shore Suburbs of Chicago, whose sports teams he came to love, especially the Cubs. He later lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he attended Escola Maria Imaculada (The Chapel School). He also attended Deerfield High School in Deerfield, IL and Florida Atlantic University. In addition to his work at Scripps, he had been employed in the music and electronics industries with the Heath Co., Atlantic Electronics, Kaufman-Daenzer Instruments and Palm Beach Community College. Preston had a deep love of music and was blessed with a natural talent. He played both bass guitar and keyboards with many local bands. He enjoyed electronics, computers, and was a member of The Thunderbird and Cougar Club of America, a group for classic car lovers. Preston was a caring, loyal and trusting person who touched so many hearts, always there with a smile, to cheer people up, and to help in any way that he could. Preston is survived by his wife, Michele R. (Stright) Smith and son, Preston H. Smith IV, of Wellington, FL; his parents, Barbara and Preston H. Smith, Jr., of North Carolina; a brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Lisa Smith of Illinois; nieces, Katherine, Megan, and Grace; and nephew, Grant. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM, May 31, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 345 S. Military Trail, West Palm Beach, FL 33415. Father John A. Gallagher and Msgr. Jeffrey A. Ingham V.F. con-celebrants. Please join the Smith Family and Preston's Scripps Family following the Mass, at a Celebration of Life reception at 2:00PM, May 31, at The Scripps Research Institute, 130 Scripps Way, Jupiter, FL 33458.
