Richard Ervin YINGER Obituary
YINGER, Richard Ervin

Richard Ervin Yinger, 73, died peacefully on January 9th, 2014, in the care of Hospice of Palm Beach County at Bethesda Memorial Hospital. He had a deep understanding and acceptance of dying as a beautiful transition to his time to be with God. Rich was born April 12, 1940 in York, PA, to Harold 'Strack' and Grace Kashner Yinger. He graduated from the William Penn Senior High School (York High) Industrial Arts Program - Electrical Shop in 1958 and enlisted in the US Marine Corps for three years. Rich earned a B.S. in Social Sciences Education from Millersville State Teacher's College (1965), as well as a Master's degree in economics (1966) and a PhD in sociology (1971) from the Florida State University. In 1974, Rich married his loving wife, Susan Williams Estes and joyfully became father to Matthew. That year, he also joined the faculty of Palm Beach Junior College (now Palm Beach State College) in Lake Worth, FL, where he taught until his retirement in 2006. During his tenure at PBSC, he served as Chair of the Social Sciences Department, received the award for Best Florida Community College Teacher of the Year in 1985 and was awarded a National Teaching Excellence Award in 1989. He passionately supported his colleagues and students, and made a positive and lasting difference in many lives. Always active, Rich walked and exercised for hours a day. He enjoyed deep discussions and reading books that expanded his knowledge and understanding of the universe. Above all, Rich was devoted to his family. Rich is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan; son Matthew (Julia); daughter Sarah (Dan); son Timothy (Olivia); grandchildren Masha, Nicholas, Natalina, Natalie, Zoe, and Emma; brother Kenneth (Susan); and sister Cindy (Jeff) as well as many special nieces and nephews. Rich believed that 'In the end, the only thing that matters is the love we have given and the love we have received.' A memorial service will be held at Son Life Lutheran Church in Boynton Beach, FL on Sunday, January 26th at 1:00 pm. A service will also be held in Pennsylvania at a later date. To honor the high importance Rich placed on college education, contributions in honor of Dr. Yinger may be sent to the Palm Beach State College Foundation General Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers. Also donations may be made to the Son Life Luthern Church Memorial Fund.
