Solomon Holland
Solomon L. Holland ("Sol") was born on November 17, 1932 in Tuskegee, Alabama to parents Levi Holland Sr. and Lucy Brown. Sol was called home on March 14, 2021 surrounded in love by his dedicated wife, Karen and sons, Peter and Dexter.
Sol graduated from Tuskegee Institute High School in and 1950 and enlisted in the U.S. Air force. During his military career he served at several bases including Toyko International Airport, Japan – Anchorage Air Force base, Alaska – Wheelus Air Base, Libya and Torrejon Air Base, Spain. He was briefly stationed at Morrison Field in West Palm Beach, Florida in 1955. Sol so loved the area that he vowed to return to live there after he retired from military. Sol moved permanently to West Palm Beach in 1978.
Throughout his esteemed military career, Sol had experienced several milestones including attending the viewing of George Washington Carver's body before his funeral in 1943, the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake in Alaska, and the 1969 Military Coup in Libya when Colonel Muammar Khadafi deposed of King Idris. He was honored to serve under Colonel Daniel "Chappie" James, a Tuskegee Airman at Wheelus Air Base. Sol retired from the Air force in 1971.
Sol returned home and graduated from The Tuskegee Institute in 1973. In 1975, he earned a Master's Degree in Criminology from Florida State University. Sol then began working with the State of Florida and retired from the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services in 1994.
Sol is survived by his wife, Karen Campbell of West Palm Beach; sons Peter K. Holland (Tracy) of Fort Pierce, Florida and Dexter L. Holland of Louisville, Kentucky; grandsons, Darius D. Holland, Daniel P. Holland, and Gerard K. Harper, granddaughters Shar-Dae T. Holland, Khadejah Z. Holland, Sierra M. Williams, and Rachel Holland; brother Schurlock Holland, Sr., of Tallahassee, Florida and sister Bettye Greenlee of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sol was blessed with many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Sol is predeceased by his parents, brother Levi Holland Jr. and sisters Lily Johnson, Alice Joyce Kirk, and Lois Holland.
Sol was a true gentleman beloved by many. He had an infectious laugh, a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit that made everyone smile. He will be greatly missed.
He was a supporter of several organizations including the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), Red Tail Squadron, and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Solomon will be laid to rest on April 14, 2021 at 2:30pm with Military Honors at South Florida VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida.
