Marjorie H. Fortenberry, age 89, of Palm Beach Shores and Okeechobee, FL, passed away July 20, 2014. She was born in Lauratown, AR on December 23, 1924. Margie left Arkansas as a young woman to seek her fortune in St. Louis and soon after joined the Army Air Corps, serving as a nurse during World War II. After her discharge, she met and married Wayne Fortenberry. They made their home in Belle Glade and later in West Palm Beach, where they both worked for the Palm Beach County School District. Margie was an accomplished singer, and for over ten years was a member of the Sweet Adelines. Margie loved to fish. Over the years she and Wayne owned six different homes around Lake Okeechobee (she also loved to move), where Margie caught the fish and Wayne cleaned the fish. Margie was an excellent cook, and her fried fish was the best. When they retired, Margie and Wayne spent a lot more time in Okeechobee where they were active in the Church of Christ, the VFW and the American Legion, for which Margie served several years as Chaplain. Margie was full of fun, quick with a joke and was always the life of every party and fish fry. Margie was preceded in death by Wayne in 2012. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Larry Smith, granddaughter, Sydney Smith, siblings, Imogene Counts, Neil Nunally and Mildred Richey, many nieces, nephews, friends, dedicated caregivers and dog, Chad. Visitation will be 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Friday, July 25, 2014 at Aycock-Riverside Funeral Home, 1112 Military Trail, Jupiter, FL 33458. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 10:00AM at Port Mayaca Cemetery, 23900 SW Kanner Hwy (SR 76), Canal Point, FL 33438. Because Margie was such an animal lover, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, 4100 SW Leighton Farm Avenue, Palm City, FL 34990.
