Sr. Irene O.S.C. LAVELLE Obituary
LAVELLE, Sr. Irene, O.S.C.

Sr. Irene Lavelle, O.S.C., (80) passed away on Monday, August 11, 2014 at Lourdes-Noreen McKeen Residence in West Palm Beach. Born in County Mayo, Ireland on August 17, 1933, she was one of the youngest of eighteen children born to Patrick Lavelle and Ann Meeneghan Lavelle. Her father and brothers were fishermen and her mother was a "stay at home mom." After WW II, some of her sisters emigrated to England and encouraged Irene to follow. They later emigrated to the US, and because she was young her sisters promised their mother to watch out for her. Irene did domestic work for a number of years, first for private families and later in a rectory in NY. Always devout, she joined the Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ, a Franciscan Secular institute who ran Villa Cortona Apostolic Center, Bethesda, MD. As a result of meeting the Poor Clares at the Villa, Irene felt called to enter Christ the King Monastery in Delray Beach, FL, in July 1968. She pronounced her first vows in May 1970. Always an enthusiastic member of the community, Sr. Irene worked in a variety of jobs in which her innate generosity was always evident. Due to increasing infirmity and arthritis, her health deteriorated and she required additional assistance. She was no longer able to live in the monastery so the Carmelite Sisters at the Lourdes-Noreen McKeen Residence provided the needed care for Sister, for which we are deeply grateful. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2014 at Christ the King Monastery, 3900 Sherwood Blvd., Delray Beach, FL 33445. Prior to the Mass, visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. The interment will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery, Royal Palm Beach, FL. Arrangements by Quattlebaum Funeral Home 561-832-5171
