James Gerald "Strick" (A/K/A) STRICKLAND Obituary
STRICKLAND, James Gerald (A/K/A) "Strick"89, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2014 in Hobe Sound, FL. He was born in Corinth, MS in September of 1924 and graduated from Corinth High School in 1943. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II on the battleship USS Maryland as a Radarman 3rd class until 1945. During his tour of duty, his ship was struck by an aerial torpedo bomb and a kamikaze airplane. After leaving the Navy, he attended college at the University of Mississippi, and the University of Georgia where he graduated. He was later employed by the United States Secret Service in New Orleans, LA, and served on a detail guarding President Dwight D. Eisenhower during part of that time. He left the Secret Service in 1960 to move to West Palm Beach, FL and assist his sister Julia with operating her auto parts store after the death of her husband. He later opened his own store in Lake Park, FL which he operated until the early 1980s before retiring. His hobbies included playing golf and working crossword puzzles. Mr. Strickland was a member of The First Baptist Church of Hobe Sound, Florida, where he enjoyed the fellowship for several years. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Hardie Strickland and Maud Wilson Strickland, wife Jean Harris Strickland, daughter Jan Strickland Prendergast, son Jeffrey Todd Strickland; four brothers, Roy Strickland, Noel Strickland, Odell Strickland, and Grady Strickland; and four sisters, Raye Irwin, Audrey Sanders, Nellie Babb, and Julia Reid. Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Helen "Cookie" Moore Strickland; a son, Scott Strickland and his wife, Eileen Manning Strickland, of Merritt Island, FL; one sister, Ethel Harris of Corinth, MS; three grandchildren, Stacy Watts Lawrence, Sarah Strickland and John Strickland; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Lawrence and Devin Lawrence; and other relatives and friends.
