Isabell Masters Obituary
Isabell Masters, mother of Riviera Beach Mayor Thomas Masters, died in her sleep Sunday at a Lake Worth nursing home. She was 98.

Masters, a Topeka, Kansas native, was a retired schoolteacher who worked in Oklahoma, New York, Nevada and California. She earned her Ph.D from the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Masters was a perennial third-party candidate for President of the United States, the mayor said. Her running mate in 1992 was Walter Ray Masters, her son. In 1996, it was Shirley Jean Masters, her daughter. In 2000, Masters was a write-in candidate in Kansas. Masters has been a candidate for president more than any other woman in history, the mayor said.

A mother of six, Masters had been one of the community leaders protesting then-President George Bush's effort to stop the Florida recount following the controversial 2000 presidential election.

Masters lived with the mayor the last four years of her life. He was her primary caregiver.

"Another solider has gone on home to be with the Lord," the mayor said. "We are thankful that she died peacefully and that she was given such a long, fulfilling life. She was my example."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
