A South Fork High School student was killed and another injured in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Stuart.|
The crash happened at about 3:15 p.m. near the entrance to Crystal Lake Elementary School at State Road 76 and Southwest 96th Street.
The Florida Highway Patrol identified the deceased as Briana Lawson, 15, of Stuart. Lawson was a passenger in a car driven by 18-year-old Andrea Lynn Colletti, also of Stuart, FHP said. Colletti sustained minor injuries.
According to an FHP crash report, Colletti was driving east on SW 96th Street when she tried to stop at a red light. She lost control and began to spin clockwise before the left side of the car struck a concrete pole.
Lawson was sitting in the rear passenger seat, the report said.
"This is a tremendous tragedy, a tremendous loss to the community and South Fork High School," Martin County School District Superintendent Laurie Gaylord said Wednesday evening.
Grief counselors will be available for students, their families and school faculty.
"It will take time and lots of support to make sense of this terrible loss," Gaylord said.
