Frances Mackin Goettsche Smith died August 16th, 2013 She was born July 11, 1914 in Cottage
Grove, Oregon to Samuel and Ethel Pressly Mackin. She graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1932. When she was 15 yrs of age, she was accepted as a piano student of Jane Thatcher at the University Of Oregon School Of Music. Mrs. Thatcher had studied in Vienna under the well known pianist and composer Leschetitzky. At the UO School of Music she gave classical concerts and later provided selections for groups wherever she lived. Her ability to play any popular tune she could hum inspired her later in life to play for many convalescent hospital patients on a weekly basis.
After attending the University of Oregon she moved to Berkeley California to attend Armstrong Business College. In Berkeley, she was employed by the University of California, Institute of Child Welfare, and Adolescent Growth Study. During World War II
she worked for The Paraffine Companies - Pabco, in the Research Dept's library. While working as their librarian, she joined the San Francisco Bay area Special Libraries Association where she served as vice president and editor of their bulletin.
In 1946 she married Richard H. Goettsche. When General Petroleum Corp transferred him to Napa, she worked for the Veteran's Home in Yountville. In 1947 they were transferred to Chico. That year she began working for Butte County Probation Department and served as a deputy probation officer for 27 years. Richard Goettsche died of pneumonia in April, 1971. In Nov. 1975 she married US Navy
Lt Commander Everett C. Smith, retired, and moved to Paradise. In the following years they traveled abroad extensively. Everett died of pneumonia on Sept 23, 2004.
Memberships included the Chico Soroptimist Club; she served as President in 1972-73. She was instrumental in forming an American Field Service chapter in Chico (a foreign high school student exchange program) and served as the first president.
She was a member of California Probation and Parole Assoc serving a term on the State Board of Directors and as Chairman for the Superior Chapter. She is a member of Paradise Chapter #74 of the Public Employees Assoc Paradise chapter where she has served as President and Newsletter Editor.
She is survived by two step children: Elizabeth Carol Smith Braithwaite of Portland Oregon and Coleman Smith of Los Alamos, NM.
