Family and friends of George Hartwell are deeply saddened to announce his death on September 7th after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

George Whitney Hartwell was born on June 3, 1943 in Natick, MA to John Hartwell and Helen Rice Hartwell. An outstanding nature photographer and amateur botanist, George enjoyed a varied and wide-ranging career. After four years at Sewanee Military Academy where his adventures and escapades were legion and legendary, George went on to study journalism at the University of Florida, Gainesville. His career in broadcast journalism and public affairs included a stint as a television news reporter and anchor at WIXT in Syracuse, NY and two years in the Bahamas as a public relations and marketing manager for the Government of the Bahamas. He spent three years as a political reporter at KXTV Television in Sacramento, and worked as a senior writer for Sterling Software in Rancho Cordova before becoming a public information officer for the California Department of Real Estate for whom he edited their quarterly bulletin. In recent years he worked for the California Department of Transportation and later the California Highway Patrol as a public information officer, media spokesperson, and writer and editor of numerous department publications, audio and visual presentations. In 1986 George served as press secretary to then state Senator John Garamendi. A gifted writer, George was also author of Fishing Guide to the Bahamas, Hastings House. 1975, and contributed to numerous magazines and newspapers, as well as technical and peer-reviewed journals. While living in Florida, George witnessed terrible environmental damage, leading him to become a committed and outspoken advocate for the environment. During his long career George made many friends, some famous or infamous: the baseball giant Ted Williams gave him fly-casting lessons and Adam Clayton Powell was a colorful and memorable acquaintance.
George is survived by his daughters Whitney Hartwell of Oakland, CA, and Heidi Marshall of Indianapolis, IN, sons Ira Hartwell of Lake Worth, FL, and Erin Hartwell of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, brother J.Graham Hartwell of Dover Spring, MD, and by especial friend Nancy Perkins of Ione, CA.
