Peter Houck Riehlman Obituary
PETER HOUCK RIEHLMAN, age 79, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013 in Paradise, CA. Pete was born in Cortland, New York on December 10, 1933. Pete was always active in athletics and completed his academic education on a football scholarship at the University of Utah. A love of football led Pete to a career in coaching.
Football took Pete many places during his life. He started as a graduate assistant and moved on to various high school coaching positions in Nevada and California. In 1963 he joined the staff at U.C. Santa Barbara. Four years later Pete took the head coaching job at Chico State leading the team to the Camellia Bowl in 1971. Pete coached in the World Football League and Weber State College. He was an NFL scout for the Oakland Raiders. Later Pete coached American football in Italy and Germany.
His players remember him for his organizational ability and his talent to teach and recruit, but his family remembers his sentimental side. Pete loved history and to travel. He rarely missed an athletic event of his grandchildren. He was a member and past president of the Paradise Pines Men's Golf Club. He loved to challenge family members to a game of cards and could be found watching sporting events with family and friends. To the end of his life he could recite a poem by Keats entitled "Ode to a Nightingale" that he had learned in school. "That I might drink and leave the world unseen, And with thee fade away into the forest dim."
During his travels in Germany, Pete developed an interest in genealogy and spent hours researching his family tree.
He is survived by his wife Peg; children, Franklin (Mary), Mark (Liz), Troy (Mary Ann), Ann Patterson (Pat), Donald and grandchildren, Je Nae, Sarah, John, Kyle, Peter and Emily; his sister Geraldine Billotte (Leonard) and her children Terry and Mike. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Franklin and beloved grandson Josh.
A Memorial Service celebrating Pete's life will be held at the Lakeside Pavilion in California Park, 2565 California Park Drive, Chico, CA. on July 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
Donations may be made to Paradise Hospice in care of Newton-Bracewell Cremation and Funeral Service. View full obituary online at WWW.NBCFH.COM.
