Joanella Marguerite Heitzman-Gavagan, 63, of Hagerman, ID and formerly of Paradise, CA, died May 5, 2009 at her home. She was born January 1, 1946 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of David Kling, Sr., and Joyce A. Laird Kling. The family settled in Santa Ana, CA in 1960 where they started a moving and storage business. Joanella graduated from Santiago High School in 1964. She spent over 35 years working in the moving and storage industry. She was a member of the Episcopal Church since 1957 and served as a Sunday School Teacher.

Joanella's passion in life was centered around the Girl Scouts of America. She served in the Orange County and Sierra Cascade Councils from 1973 to 1980. While living in Paradise, she initiated two "Pixie" Girl Scout Troops, which were the first in the Sierra Cascade Council. The Pixies are now known as Daisies. Joanella also served as a Leader/Co-Leader for Brownies and Juniors, Troop Organizer, Troop Consultant for Pixies, Brownies and Juniors; Liaison to the P.T.A., and Assistant Service Unit Chairperson. She will be remembered as enthusiastic, optimistic and hard working.

Joanella is survived by her husband Joseph A. Gavagan of Hagerman; her daughters, June M. (Gregory) McLaughlin of Chico, CA and Dawn M. (Douglas) Peters of Hagerman; her son, John D. (Wanda J.) Heitzman of Paradise, CA; two sisters, Judith (Garry) Hudson of Cheyenne, WY and Joyce (G. Duane) Meyer of Paradise, CA; one brother, David (Linda) Kling, Jr., also of Paradise, CA; grandchildren, Tasha, Stephany, Jessica, John, Cali, Morgan, Emily and Zachary. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, her ex-husband Ike Heitzman and many extended family members and friends.

A Celebration of Joanella's Life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Monday May 18, 2009 at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 5872 Oliver Rd., Paradise, California, with Reverend Anne Sullivan officiating.

Joanella suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to: Girl Scouts of America, Chico or Paradise Service Units, c/o June McLaughlin, 1395 Ridgewood Dr. Ste. # 300, Chico, CA 95973.
