Silas Eugene "Si" Wheeler passed away Monday morning, August 22nd at Feather River Hospital's Hospice House in Paradise, at the age of 89. Si was born July 15th, 1922 in Santa Ana, California to Paul and Ruth Wheeler. He was one of five children. His three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Si and his family arrived in Paradise in 1954. He worked in the grocery business in Butte County for over 30 years, retiring from Holiday Market in Paradise in 1987. Long-time residents may remember Si for his ready smile and quick wit. He was also Grand Marshal of the Gold Nugget Days celebration in 1972, having been elected overwhelmingly by a write-in campaign.
After retiring, he and his wife, Mary Lou, enjoyed traveling together. They saw much of the western United States, including Alaska, and also made several trips to British Columbia.
Si was a veteran of the Marine Corp, having served during World War II. He spent the war serving in the South Pacific, participating in several of the major island battles, including Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.
Si is survived by his wife of thirty years, Mary Lou Wheeler of Paradise, his son, Paul Wheeler and wife Cheryl of Palm Harbor, Florida, his daughter, Melinda Tackitt and husband John of Paradise, his daughter, Shirley Hilgers and husband Herb of Redmond, Washington, his step-son, Chris Pratt and wife Megan of Sanford, North Carolina, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
No services are planned. Donations may be made in memory of Si to the Paradise Animal Shelter.
