Eugene (Gene) Charles Huber Obituary
Eugene (Gene) Charles Huber, of Roseville California, devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather, passed away with his wife by his side, on Monday October 15th 2012 at the age of 87 due to congestive heart failure.
Gene was born October 20th, 1924 in San Francisco, to Charles George Huber and Ruth Lillian Peters Huber. He has one sister Lois Huber Crotty.
Gene married BettyV. Downing on Jan 26th, 1946 and remained faithfully in love for 66 years.
Gene attended Balboa High School in San Francisco. In March 1942, after graduating from Balboa HS, Gene was drafted into the army and served 3 years in Italy in the 91st Division Infantry. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. Gene went on to college to receive a Bachelors of Arts Degree from the University of California, Berkley in 1948. Following he received his first Masters of Arts Degree from Stanford University in 1955 and a second Masters of Arts Degree from Stanford University in 1969.
Gene was proud to teach Physical Education at his almamater, Balboa High School before moving into the Science department to teach Physiology.Gene coached soccer and had many championships to his credit. His soccer team was recently inducted into the Balboa Hall of Fame. Gene is also credited with many winning seasons as baseball coach. While teaching he also found time to play catcher on a semi-pro baseball team sponsored by Delmonte Meat Co.
Gene spent several years as supervisor for the San Francisco Unified School District. Duringhis tenure with the districtas supervisor for Family Life Education and Drug Abuse at the high school level, Gene was once referred to as "Mr. Sex" in a news article written by the SF Chronicle. He retired as vice principal of Balboa High School in 1987. After retiring from the school district, Gene worked as a security guard at Bay Meadows Race Track.
In 1985Gene and Betty built a home in Magalia, Ca. and lived there for 13 years before moving to their current residence in Roseville, Ca in 1998.
Gene loved to play golf and was an avid SF Giants and SF 49ers fan. He was very involved at St. Clare Catholic Church as aPast Grand Knight and Lifetime Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 12887. Gene was also very active in the SIR group in Roseville.
Gene loved teaching and said he always tried to give his students a positive experience whether it was on the sports field or in the classroom, so they would return for more.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Betty of 66 years, his sister Lois Huber Crotty and her husband Charlie Crotty,"The Tribe:" Linda Karen Huber Neth and husband Phil of Rancho Murieta, Ca., Sandra Marie Huber Wicher and husband Gordon of Walla Walla, Wa., Michael Charles Huber and wife Fran of Redwood City, Ca., Donald Eugene Huber and wife Susie of Placerville, Ca., Richard Allen Huber and wife Valerie of Roseville, Ca., and Patricia Jean Huber Taylor and husband John of Roseville, Ca. 14 grandchildren (one grandson preceded him in death), 6 Great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a viewing at Lambert Funeral Home, 400 Douglas Blvd. Roseville, Ca. on Monday October 29th between 4 and 7 pm with a Rosary at 6 pm.
Funeral services will be Tuesday morning, Oct. 30th, 10 a.m. at St Clare Catholic Church, 1950 Junction Blvd. Roseville. Ca.A Celebration of Life reception will immediately follow in the parish hall.
