Delbert (Del) Knight, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 in Magalia, CA. Del was born on June 20, 1926 to Verner and Georgia Knight in beautiful Denver CO. He grew up there with his family.
After graduating from South High School in Denver, Del faithfully served as an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946, during WWII. In 1949 he moved to Pasadena, CA to attend Pasadena Nazarene College. In 1953, upon graduating, Del accepted a job at Mesa Union School in Ventura County, where he served as a school teacher and principal for 30 years. Del also worked as a tour bus driver for 7 years while in Ventura. On July 30, 1983, Delbert Ray Knight married Mary Della Kimbrell. After they were married Del and Mary moved to South Lake Tahoe where he worked as a limo driver for 10 years. Leaving Lake Tahoe, they moved to Penn Valley for 3 years and moved one last time to Magalia where he would spend his last 8 years.
Over the years Del accomplished many things. A few of his greatest accomplishments included, writing a book about his life for his family as well as several short stories about life adventures. He also took on a great adventure himself when he hiked Mt. Whitney in the 1950's. Del Loved fishing in Lake Tahoe, and was a member of the Ventura Elks Lodge. He was also an instructor for AARP. When Del moved to Magalia he became active in his community by serving on the Greenbelt Committee for the Paradise Pines Property Owners Association. He also became a member of Craig Memorial Congregational Church, serving in the Caring Ministries.
Del is survived by his wife Mary Della Knight; 3 sons, Terry M. (Annette) Knight of Glendale, CA, Randall B. (Karen) Knight of Eagle, ID and Greg S. (Pam) Knight of Ventura, CA; 2 stepdaughters, Debra (Jared) Derrick of Chico, CA and Malinda (Mike) Valdez of Camarillo, CA; stepson, Jeff G. Hohimer of Los Angeles, CA; son-in-law, Ray Davis of Penn Valley, CA; 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 19 nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by first wife Retha June (Dinwiddie) Knight, and daughter Janet Rae Knight Davis.
A Memorial Service for Del will be held at Craig Memorial Congregational Church, 5665 Scottwood Rd., Paradise, CA, on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Paradise Hospice in care of Newton-Bracewell Cremation and Funeral Service of Paradise.
