Roy Vernon Deffner Obituary
ROY VERNON DEFFNER Roy Vernon Deffner (94) died January 12, 2014, at the Pineview Care Center in Paradise, California. Roy was born on October 18, 1919 to Emil and Lydia (Eschenbacher) Deffner in Maywood, Illinois. He attended a Lutheran grade school where his father was a teacher. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After service in China, he was transferred to Glenview Air Base, north of Chicago, where he met his future wife, Dorothy {Dottie) Jean Smith. They moved to Santa Venetia, CA in 1953. Roy worked as a Surety Bond Underwriter in San Francisco until 1966. He decided he wanted a change out of the "big city" and began a second career with the U.S. Forest Service. His internship year was in Nevada City, CA after which he was permanently assigned to Susanville, where he worked until his retirement in 1981. Roy and Dottie traveled extensively in their RV for many years, square dancing, rock hounding and fishing. Roy was a talented artist and he created many beautiful paintings. Roy is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Dottie; his son Richard and wife Aurora; his daughter Susan and husband Tom; his son Dan and wife Julie; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2014. at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 6404 Pentz Road, Paradise, CA. There will be a light lunch following the service in the social hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Our Savior Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.25
