John Hershel Fitz, was born June 24, 1925, in Marquez, Texas. He was the 8th of 10 children born to Bertha and Robert Fitz. John failed the first grade, because he refused to talk, but from then on, it was difficult to keep him quiet. John loved and held dear his family, as they were his most cherished possessions. He also loved the outdoors, especially gardening, as well as fishing and duck/goose hunting. He had a mischievous sense of humor, and enjoyed playing practical jokes on any unsuspecting soul.
John graduated from Marquez High School in 1943. In 1944, he volunteered for the Merchant Marines. He then attended Sam Houston State Teachers College - now a University - and graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in Agriculture. He was then drafted and served in the Army, stationed at Fort Sill, OK. When John received his honorable discharge, in 1952, his rank was Corporal.
He then went to work for a chemical plant on the ship channel, Sinclair Oil, which later came to be known as Petro-Tex. He spent 32 years at his job as a safety inspector, and thoroughly enjoyed the work and camaraderie with his co-workers. When the plant sold in 1984, he took early retirement and never looked back. John spent his retirement years fishing, gardening, camping and traveling across the U.S. and Canada, never tiring of all the adventurous encounters.
John was predeceased by his parents, brothers Dilmas, Orville, Heston, Doyle, Robert Earl, Jack, and Joe Allen; his sisters Bess Fritter and Janell Maurer, and his oldest daughter - Ann Fitz Gonzales. John is survived by his wife of 60 years - Virginia; daughter and son-in-law - Jane Fitz Swanson and Tom Swanson of Galveston, Texas; sons - John F. Fitz of Burnet, Texas, and James E. Fitz of Pasadena, Texas, four grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the care and kindness received from the staff at The Courtyards at Pasadena and A-med Hospice Care.
