McWilliams, Charlotte G.
Charlotte Gordon McWilliams, 95 passed away on Friday, December 14th at a
retirement community in Durham, North Carolina where she lived near her daughter and family. She was born on July 5, 1917 in Glendora, California, the daughter of the late G. B. Gordon, Sr. and Ethel Colcord Gordon. She was a descendent of one of San Gabriel Valley's oldest families, the granddaughter of Judge and Mrs. Hugh Taylor Gordon.
Charlotte was a graduate of Citrus High School, attended Citrus College, and in 1938 she received her BA degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Upon graduation, she returned to Glendora where she assisted her father and family in the management of Oakdale Memorial Park. She was a member and past president of the Azusa-Glendora Business and Professional Women's Club.
On October 7, 1941 at the home of her parents in Glendora, Charlotte married the late Francis DeSales McWilliams of Indian Head, Maryland. It was in Glendora that they made their home and she spent most of her life. She was active in community organizations including the In-B-Tweens, the Junior Auxiliary of Covina Inter-Community Hospital, Covina School District PTA and the Foothill Presbyterian Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by her three children, daughter Charlotte McWilliams Johnson and husband Ross of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, son John Gordon McWilliams and wife Linda of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and son Francis D. McWilliams, III and wife Alice of Houston, Texas, grandchildren, Michael Johnson and wife Andie of Henderson, North Carolina, Gregory Johnson and wife Teresa of Raleigh, North Carolina, Bryan McWilliams of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Francis McWilliams and wife Amy of Houston, Texas, and Elizabeth McWilliams of Houston, Texas and six great grandchildren Mack, Macy Lee, Rebecca, Ella Catherine, Sophia, and Lottie, all in North Carolina.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her brothers, G.B. Gordon, Jr. and John C. Gordon, killed in WW II. Also, preceding her in death was her dear family friend and caregiver, Lydia Castellano of Pomona.
Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 12 noon at Oakdale Memorial Park, 1401 S. Grand Avenue, Glendora.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross, Los Angeles Region Headquarters, 11355 Ohio Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90025 or to the charity of your choice in Charlotte's memory.
