Ilene K. Cole

Ilene K. Cole

Ilene K. Cole, a former Long Beach resident, passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 19, 2014. Ilene was born in Deerfield, Missouri on May 28, 1927 to parents Jay Lynne and Thelma Burch Klontz. She moved to Long Beach in 1945 and married Lyman M. "Bill" Cole in 1946 on a popular radio show called Bride and Groom. The "MGM Goldwyn Girls" were her bridesmaids. Ilene spent most of her life not only taking care of everyone and everything at home and raising two daughters, but she was also extremely active in many clubs and charities in Long Beach. She belonged to the Ebell Juniors Club of Long Beach, was active in the GOP and Eastern Star. She did a lot of charity work and her favorite one was Ability First (formerly Crippled Children's Society). She enjoyed painting and playing golf (when she could) with Bill and her girlfriends in a regular foursome at "Little Rec". But most of her time was dedicated to her family and their friends. She was very supportive and involved with all of her daughters' activities and friends, from always being the leader of the Girl Scout and Campfire girl troops to dance and baton lessons and competitions and parades. She was everyone's favorite Mom. She is survived by her daughters Janis Utz and Elaine Cooper, son-in-law, Greg Cooper, along with her granddaughters, Erica Utz Wochna (Erik), Jamie Utz Thomas (Kevin), Stacie Cooper and her great-granddaughter, Paige Thomas. Ilene has four siblings that she has predeceased including her twin, Irene Luther, sisters - Helen Kutina and LaDene Bley and a brother, Leonard Klontz. She was also very loved and admired by a myriad of nieces and nephews. Ilene did not wish to have a formal memorial service. She was a member of the Neptune Society and her ashes will be scattered (along with husband Bill's) by the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to her charity, Ability First, in her honor. Mail to: Ability First, 3770 East Willow Street, Long Beach, CA 90815. Please sign the guestbook
