Thelma Eulene Ray was born in Dumas, Texas to Sarah Killingsworth on December 11, 1922 and entered her final rest at Lakewood Regional Hospital on April 7, 2013. Thelma was the only child born to Sarah who was known as Me Ma to all who loved her. Raised by her grandparents, Thelma spent her early life in Quail, Texas due to her mother working out of town. At 14, she moved back with her mother to Lubbock, Texas where she gradated from Lubbock High School. Following World War II, she moved to Sunset Beach, California where she began working at Yee's Kitchen in Belmont Shore. At Yee's she met a Sailor of the Pacific Theatre who persistently got his fill of Chinese food until he got a date with her. That man, Doyle C. Ray and Thelma fell in love and were married on August 20, 1948. In October 1950, they purchased a home in Lakewood where they raised their family. Together they enjoyed camping with their children and the Douglas Trailer Club, square dancing at Mayfair Park with the Lakewood Square Dancing Club as well as being members of their neighborhood poker club, and Thelma also enjoyed her Bunko nights with the ladies. Thelma enjoyed a long career with the County of Los Angeles from which she retired after 30 years of service. After retirement, they enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and forever watching their beloved Lakers. Doyle and Thelma were married for 60 years, he preceding her to rest in 2007. Her legacy lives on in her four sons, Johnny, Jerry, Richard and Randy, who provided 9 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. All who knew her will remember her unconditional love, as she always found the good in everyone. On April 8, 2013 the Lakewood City Council memorialized her as one of the First and outstanding citizens of Lakewood, where she lived her dreams.
