Clara Woodward Burgess
1918 - 2014
Clara Woodward Burgess passed away March 24, 2014. She was born October 24, 1918 to Herbert Starr and Ethyl Warren Woodward in Hobson, Montana. She graduated from the
University of Minnesota
in Minneapolis in 1941 where she was a member of Alpha Phi, and earned her pilot's license. After college, she married William Henry Burgess in Minnesota. They moved from Washington DC to California, where they became residents of Pasadena and Palm Springs. From 1946 to 1949 she worked for the Juvenile Crime Prevention Bureau for the Pasadena Police Department. She attended the University of Southern California in 1948.
Listed in Who's Who of American Women, she went on to become an active member of more than fifty social organizations including Chairman of the Women's Civic League, Director and life member of the YWCA, Founder of the Pasadena Chapter of Hope, Director of the Art Alliance of the Pasadena Art Museum, President of the Pasadena Philharmonic Committee, Director of the Pasadena Symphony Association, Founding Member of the Los Angeles Music Center, Founding Fellow of the L.S.B. Leakey Foundation, President of Les Dames de Champagne, Founding Board Member of the Los Angeles Ballet Society, President of ARCS, Director and President of the Palm Springs Friends of the L.A. Philharmonic, Director of the Palm Springs Desert Museum Women's Committee, and Founding Member of the Diadames of the Child Care League.
She was a member of the Town Club and Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena, the River Club in New York, and the Tennis Club, Racquet Club, and Eldorado Golf Club in Palm Springs. She was an active member of the Palm Springs Desert Riders and The Clara Burgess Trail is named in her honor. She is survived by two children, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
There will be a Celebration of Clara's Life on May 3 from 2:00-4:00 pm, Andreas Canyon, Palm Springs.
