Obituary Condolences

ALVA-Beatrice Salazar Alva, San Gabriel native of Gabrieleno descent. Born March 31, 1914 on San Gabriel Mission Property. Went home to be with The Lord June 19, 2010. Married to Henry Alva at the Old San Gabriel Mission Church in 1936. She is survived by three daughters, one son: Camila Lopez, Rita Vera, Anita Katrenich, Anthony Alva. 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. Bea attended Washington School in San Gabriel and graduated Alhambra High School in 1931. Community activities: SGSD PTA, Teachers Aide, Title I ESL, Washington School. Board Member of La Casa Community Center. First San Gabriel Mission Fiesta Queen 1934. Member San Gabriel Mission Choir from 1935-1980. Elder of Gabrieleno Band of Mission Indians. Actively involved for many years in the preservation of her Gabrieleno ancestry. Member of the Junipero Serra Senior Club from 1974-2005. Member of SG Historical Association for more than 15 years. Community awards include: SG GI Forum outstanding citizen's award, 1964. CSEA Chapter 80 of SG for loyal service to youth. Bea was an accomplished singer and pianist. The 1933 SG Chamber monthly bulletin describes Bea as the "Song Bird" of the SGV. She sang in the Mission Opera Company in the 1930's and sang and starred in plays written by John Steven McGroaty. The family especially thanks all staff members of Vista Cove Center in San Gabriel and Assurance Hospice for their outstanding care and sincere love given to our mother. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and community. Funeral Mass, Tuesday, June 29th, 10:30 a.m. at San Gabriel Mission with interment to follow in the San Gabriel Mission Cemetery.
