Betty Keatinge Obituary

KEATINGE-Betty W. Keatinge, Born in Astoria, Oregon, educated at the University of Washington, she pursued a career as a journalist at Business Week Magazine and then at The Wall Street Journal. In 1944, she married Richard H. Keatinge and the couple moved to Los Angeles where her husband established his legal practice and they raised their family. A passionate advocate for public libraries, she chaired the California State Library Services Board and Pasadena Public Library Foundation. She lent energetic leadership and support to Villa Esperanza Services, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Hospice of Pasadena, Huntington Hospital, Western Justice Center, and the Pasadena AIDS Task Force to name a few. An unapologetic liberal, she served several times as a delegate to Democratic National Conventions and on the California Democratic State Central Committee. She served as a public member of the California State Commission on Judicial Performance, to which she was appointed by Gov. Edmund G. Brown, Jr. She was a fearless skier and traveler. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years with whom she shared many adventures. Intensely devoted to the full development of her children and grandchildren, she is survived by sons Richard (Jessica) and Daniel (Elizabeth), a daughter, Nancy (Stanley), and their children Ben, Jenny, Augie, Libby, Joe, Bobby, Kate and Sara. The Episcopal Church, its traditions and its inclusive social mission, was central to her life. A memorial service has been scheduled for 4pm on Saturday, October 2 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 132 N. Euclid Ave., Pasadena. The Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno, Bishop Diocesan will preside. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the Pasadena Public Library (285 E. Walnut Street Pasadena, CA 91101) or to Villa Esperanza Services (Attn: Gioia Pastre, Vice President of Development, 2060 East Villa Street, Pasadena, CA 91107).
