My condolences to the Edwards family. From 1986 to mid-1990, I was in frequent touch with Don while covering the California delegation for the Mercury News. Congressman Edwards was a keen, straightforward observer of both policy and people. His warm sense of humor eased any number of our conversations.

Don Edwards was a great and gentle warrior for justice. He was uncompromising on fundamental principles and flexible and pragmatic in service of those principles.
It was an honor to be in his presence.
He was a voice of opposition to capital punishment for many years. We will soon see the fruits of his labors there too.

The constituents of California are especially saddened over the news of Rep. Edwards' death. We all join you in your grief and look forward to the time when John 5:28 will be the highlight of our day. We are assured of its fulfillment for this has been promised.

Don Edwards was a remarkable person.
He was one of four Congressmen who was against the Vietnam War when I served in his Washington DC office as a college intern the summer of 1963. He was unique, courageous, intelligent, and compassionate. Our democracy works when people find common ground, and truly share a passion for equal rights and justice for all.

I had the honor of being on Don Edwards' congressional staff from 1982- 1986. To work for a man known for his kindness, integrity, and ability to work with people across the aisle was truly a privilege and a joy. Never have I had a kinder boss or one who I respected as much. I am fortunate to be able to say that I once worked for a political with integrity. He has left his mark in so many ways. A remarkable man.
