Passed away peacefully at age 98 in Redding, Ca on April 1, 2013.
She was born into a large family in Burwell, Nebraska on March 1, 1915. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, stepdaughter Dixie and stepson Jerry and all her siblings except her sister Kathryn of Des Moines, WA. She is survived by her stepson Don of Bloomington, CA and her only son Craig of Pearl City, Hawaii, 21 grandchildren, a multitude of great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousin scattered around the country. She was a long time resident of Bloomington and Riverside before moving to Woodland and then on north to Redding in 1992.
Besides being a mother, during World War II she was a riveter at one of the many aircrafts plants in Los Angeles while Paul was a security police office there. After the war they moved to a chicken ranch in Bloomington and later to Riverside Cement Plant to run the commissary/cafe.With Paul's health failing they moved back to Bloomington to be nearer to Don. After Paul's passing she moved to Woodland to be near family and then decided she would rather live near some of her grandchildren in Redding. She was always an active woman, doing crafts, crosswords, knitting and an avid reader. When her age and failing health started to catch up to her she moved into the assisted living quarters on Churn Creek Road in Redding. Known to the family as "Grandma Gertie", she loved and was loved by all , she will be sorely missed. Interment will be with her husband, Paul in Bloomington at the cemetery located between the chicken ranch and the cement plant where she spent many years of her life. Goodbye grandma, may God Bless you and Keep you.
