Elizabeth "Sally" Dahl
Harriet Elizabeth "Sally" Witherspoon Dahl was born February 6, 1921 in Jackson, Tennessee to James F. and Clara Belle Witherspoon. She died peacefully at home January 1, 2014 at the age of 92.
Growing up on her parents' farm with its country store Witherspoon Grocery, she and her brother James F. Witherspoon II learned to drive a tractor, ride horses and mules and clerk behind the candy counter. She attended a one-room schoolhouse and loved playing basketball and tennis. Sally later studied at both Lambuth College and Tennessee Business College beginning her career as secretary to the colonel at Wolf Creek defense plant. There she met and married Stanley Martin Dahl, a love that lasted 57 years until his death in 2002.
Sally's life unfolded in three major directions: motherhood, self and wife. Her 4 daughters appreciated their mother's encouragement and involvement in their lives and activities throughout her lifetime.
She volunteered for many years as a Girl Scout leader, Presbyterian Hospital volunteer and Whittier Museum docent. Sally was a passionate gardener and plants thrived in her care. Her favorite sports were golf and tennis and she enjoyed her bridge groups, a good book and knitting.
She and Stan were active with the Whittier First Methodist Church M&M class, spent many a night together on the dance floor and traveled the world.
Sally brought southern hospitality to California making those in her presence feel welcome, at ease and amongst friends.
She is survived by Kathryn Tillotson (Joe), Sandra Radey (Tom) and Patricia Dahl, as well as her grandchildren, Wade Tillotson, Claire Izakowitz (Jason), James Mast and her great-grandson, Trent Izakowitz. Barbara Mast (George), the youngest daughter, died in 2012.
A memorial service to celebrate Sally's life will be on Saturday, March 1st, at 2:00 PM at the Whittier First United Methodist Church, 13222 Bailey Street, Whittier, Ca. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in the name of Barbara Mast to the
