Mary Elizabeth Peterson
Mary Elizabeth Peterson passed away in Long Beach on December 18, 2013. Born in Oakland, California, she spent her early years on the family ranch in Escondido. Her family then moved to Long Beach where she attended Polytechnic High School with her brother and two sisters, and was active in cheerleading and several sports. She married LCDR Robert Cleveland Evins in 1943 but was widowed during the war. She then went to school at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she met, then married, Russell Peterson. Moving back to Long Beach, Elizabeth earned a teaching degree from California State University, Long Beach, a school that she was proud of all her life. She taught physically and emotionally impaired children and then retired to take care of her own children, Keith and Martha Ann. She became a widow again in 2009. Elizabeth was a very active volunteer and loved her friends in the Assistance League and PEO. In 2004, as the result of her determined efforts, Elizabeth celebrated the dedication of the Lone Sailor Memorial on Bluff Park. Elizabeth and Russell lived in the same neighborhood for over fifty years and established strong and loving bonds with their neighbors. She was a mainstay in the Alamitos Heights Improvement Association. Elizabeth possessed great intellectual curiosity and a fondness for animals. She is survived by her son, Keith Peterson; daughter, Martha Ann Peterson Ciattei; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Kober Peterson; and grandchildren, Kyle and Eric Peterson. Donations to Elizabeth's memory may be made to Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach. Please sign the guestbook at www.presstelegram.com/obits.
