Robert Ott Obituary

OTT, Robert F.

Robert F. Ott, 54, born in Pasadena and raised in the San Gabriel Valley died tragically on December 21, 2012. His death has jolted all who have been touched by his gracious and generous nature. He was a third generation Pasadena resident, residing in Altadena. Robert was the great-grandson of the Culp family, owners of the long-standing Culp's Electric at Lake and Walnut Avenue. He graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 1976, and attended PCC, CSULA and CSUN. Robert's abundant love and hospitality changed the hearts of all he met. His tenacity, talent wealth of knowledge and work ethic led him to an incredible career in the restaurant industry. He spent more than 20 years at the Claim Jumper organization, ultimately being named CEO. His most recent venture, restaurant consulting, allowed him to work with Maria's Italian Kitchen. His numerous philanthropic endeavors included serving on the boards of Child Share, Paz Naz Compassion Creates Change and the Salvation Army. He ministered to the residents of Garfield Care Center by helping provide and serve holiday meals. He had a deep love of the outdoors; spending his free time hiking, fishing, working on his home and on annual vacations to his family's cabin In the Sierras. He was an excellent writer and an avid reader. But, most of all, Robert loved the Lord, his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Cindi; son Tyler; daughter Hailey; father, Frank Ott; sister, Lynda Ott Albright (David); brother Michael Ott (Cindy), nieces Rachel, Jillian and Sheridan Albright; mother-in-law Jean Schofield; sister-in-law Susan Henson (Mel); nephews Jason and Berry, aunts, uncles, numerous cousins and other family members. He has been reunited with his Mother, Carolyn (Culp) Ott. Robert's passing is an enormous loss to not only our family, but to our entire community; He touched every life he encountered. Services are scheduled for Saturday, December 29, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Pasadena First Church of the Nazarene.

I knew him for five minutes, that's all. Yet I saw his kindness and his giving spirit. He was a familiar face jogging in the neighborhood. The day I found an alligator lizard curled up on my bathroom floor I took a chance, stepped outside and flagged this gentleman down I had seen jogging...a gentleman that had a friendly wave and a kind smile. I live alone but saw something honorable in Robert...I asked him if he would get this lizard out of my house. He smiled, said not to worry, he does this at home all the time and bagged the lizard and released him in a distant garden. What a beautiful smile! What a warm pat on the shoulder! What a kind spirit! What a lucky encounter for me. What a good man!

To the Ott family, is this the same dear man who retrieved a very large lizard from a total stranger's home while jogging on Mendocino? I would love to share this story with his family.

My daugther, Kristen Green, went to Pasadena Chritian with Haily. So we got to know the whole family and they were a hoot! The girls got older and moved on, but I recently saw Haily and "Haily's Dad" (that's how I knew him):) at the Rose Bowl. They recongized me immediately as I ran by and both gave me those great smiles that could light up a room. That memory of the two of them is how I am going to always remember "Hailey's Dad"

I have known Robert since first grade at Dunsmore Elementary School, sharing many classrooms through the years. His smile was infectious; and so dear. We were in different circles, and did not stay in touch after high school yet reading his obituary one can see how lovely a man Robert truly was. My prayers are with his family, as this must be a terrible shock. God bless you.

Robert was the third person I met when my family moved me to La Crescenta in the fifth grade. I thought he was the coolest and funniest guy that my very shy and reserved transported Catholic had ever met. He taught me humor and how not to take yourself too seriously. We became best friends along with Mike Jackson all through the Fifth grade till High School Graduation. Robert gave me my first bible that I actually attempted to read LOL He brought life and humor to everything he did and I saw a faith in God that was undenialable that quite frankly I was envious of. I'll miss him greatly even though we had drifted apart over these last 36 years, I loved him as a friend of mine and a friend in Christ. Take Care Ott and I'll never forget you!!! I know Robert is with The Lord so that brings me some peace. I worked along side him at claim jumper restaurants and learned so much from his natural instincts of hospitality. He was funny, kind, generous, and caring. I will truly miss knowing that he is here on this earth doing what he enjoyed. He loved The Lord and his family. May Robert rest in peace. God Bless.
