Roger "Jake" Jacobsen, 73, Dana Point, CA, died Friday, February 28 in his home. A burial at sea was held at the Dana Point wharf on Friday, March 7, 2014.
Jake was born December 16, 1940 in Jeffers, Minnesota. He is the only child of Russell and Ruth Jacobsen. He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years Carmen (Thomas) Jacobsen and his parents Russell and Ruth Jacobsen. He has left behind his daughter Rochelle (Jacobsen) Butler of Providence, RI, son and daughter-in- law, David and Marie Jacobsen of Minneapolis, MN, his three grandsons John, Jordan, and Jacob Butler of Providence, RI., and his companion of many years Elene Smith.
Jake graduated from Fargo High School in 1958, started college, and married his high school sweetheart in 1960. In 1963 he accepted a teaching position at Sequoia Jr. High in Fontana, CA. He taught and coached at the junior high level for 17 years. He spent the next 19 years as an assistant principal and principal at the junior high and high school levels in Fontana.
In 1999, Jake and Carmen retired to Dana Point where he enjoyed the beach, fishing, horseshoes, and working in his garden. The next few years were spent traveling and enjoying beach life. Carmen was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2002 and passed away in 2007.
In 2008 Jake reunited with family friend Elene Smith who he spent his remaining years enjoying life with. In 2010, he was diagnosed with lymphoma. He fought hard to win the battle with cancer but lost the fight on February 28, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jake's name to the Jimmy V Cancer Research Foundation.
