Thomas Wing Obituary

November 9, 2010 Thomas W. Wing was born in Lodi, California, July 22, 1915, and grew up in the Central Valley. A scrappy farm boy with a passion for ham radio and a talent for invention, he became the first West Coast ham radio operator to win the prestigious Sweepstakes contest for long distance contacts. His first love was Kay Wing whom he married on December 20, 1942. In 1951, Tom and Kay designed and built their custom home in Claremont, CA, where they had moved because it had the best schools for their daughters Adrienne and Carolyn. A graduate of the now Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, Dr. Wing established his practice in chiropractic and Chinese herbs in Los Angles, later adding offices in Pomona and San Bernardino. He specialized in diabetes with great success. An early researcher in UHF and emergency communications, he also designed and manufactured the first profitable and affordable personal radio paging system, but he is best known for the Accu-O-Matic microcurent machine invented in 1976 and the My-O-Matic i used by many pro sports teams and Olympics. Tom credited the success of his ventures to the support, organizational skills, and intelligence of his wife Kay. He was the kite, she was the string. The Wings traveled the world and generously shared their time, attention, and resources with family and friends. When Kay fell ill, Tom cared for her himself at home. He told her, For better or worse--I meant it. He designed a transporter for her and was working on a new design up till his death. Dr. Wing was active in the community Lions Club, Pomona Drags, and other organizations. Dr. Wings inventions are in five museums. He wrote two books and contributed to three others. He wrote an article a month for Chiropractic Economics for 20 years. But his greatest legacy lies in his two daughters, 2 grandsons, 5 great grandchildren, and thousands of people who found better, healthier, more satisfying lives because he invested his love in them. Services for Dr. Thomas Wing will be held at Forest Lawn, 21300 Via Verde Drive, Covina, CA 91724. Viewing, Sun, Nov 21, 5-9 p.m. Funeral, Mon, Nov 22, 11:30 a.m.
