Robert Lee Nichols, owner and chairman of the board of Allied Refrigeration, Inc. passed away March 29, 2012 of natural causes at his home in Huntington Harbour, California. Since the death of the founder L.B. Marsh in 1966, Nichols became president and built the wholesale refrigeration business from two stores in Long Beach and Las Vegas to 16 branch warehouses throughout California and Southern Nevada. Marsh established the business in 1913 and the refrigeration branch was opened in 1934. During his 66 year tenure at Allied, Bob became well-known and beloved throughout the wholesale industry. His humor and outgoing personality were legendary. Nichols was born in Anita, Iowa, the son of Reverend Mr. Gay E. Nichols and Edna Marsh Nichols in 1920. He attended high school in Anita and then graduated from Long Beach Junior College in 1941. He joined the Army Air Corps on January 2, 1942 and served four years during WWII in England, France and Germany, and was discharged at the rank of sergeant. Nichols was a member of Old Ranch and PGA West Country Clubs. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners International and St. Peter's by the Sea. He was a longtime resident of the Huntington Harbour community where he and his wife are active members of the Orange County Philharmonic Society, as well as other cultural and charitable organizations. He is survived by his wife, Teresa, sisters, Gay Hydrick, Virgina Kellogg, daughter, Nicole Marie Nichols, and three sons, Barry Marsh Nichols, Robert Lee Nichols, Jr. and Bond Leonard Nichols. Also grandchildren, Robby, Renny, Stephanie, Joanna, Lee and great-grandchildren, Teagan and August. Memorial services will be held at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach on Saturday, April 14 from 3 to 7pm.
