On August 17, 2012, Mary Lynn Clark passed away after a courageous, four year battle with breast cancer. Throughout she remained the patient, dignified and loving person that her family, friends and acquaintances had always known and loved. It was easy to like Mary Lynn, it was a joy to love her.
She was born on April 18, 1946 in Evansville, Indiana to Wilmer and Leona Sturm. She traveled the globe as a youngster in a military family and eventually settled with her family in the Inland Empire.
She graduated from St. Bernardine's High School, completed her undergraduate studies at UC Riverside, and then went on to receive her Master's Degree in Social Work from UCLA.
She married Tom Clark in San Bernardino on October 14,1978. They resided in Redlands, California for the entirety of their 34 years of loving marriage.
Mary Lynn was employed by the Inland Regional Center of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties for over 38 years. As a Social Worker she championed services for persons with developmental disabilities. Mary Lynn quickly rose to the position of Assistant to the Director, a position which she held for 18 years. She was then appointed Director. In her over 12 years of service as Director, she oversaw an ever increasing need for services in the community, directed the single largest network of developmentally disabled citizens in the State of California and brought to bear one of the most effective service delivery systems in the country to people in need throughout the Inland Empire. She spearheaded significant advancements in services for all severity of disability. Her reach touched those diagnosed with an intellectual disability from infancy to old age.
Mary Lynn pursued her mission to enrich the lives of the developmentally disabled by leveraging early intervention services, special education, vocational training, and community living placement. These services have helped thousands of people live more productive, independent and fulfilling lives.
Mary Lynn is survived by her mother, Leona, her husband Tom, her two children, Jeff Clark (fiancé, Erika Osuna) and Sarah Sung (husband, Michael), and her grandchild, Randolph Michael Sung III. She is also survived by her siblings: Jeanne Johnson (husband, Donald), Steven Sturm (wife, Anne Harrington), and Michael Sturm (wife, Cindy) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be forever loved and missed by her family. She leaves an indelible legacy to the clients and her colleagues at the Inland Regional Center.
Services will be held at The Holy Name of Jesus Church in Redlands, CA on Thursday, August 23rd, 2012 at 10 am with reception to follow in the parish hall at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Another Way (http://anotherwayirc.org/Another_Way/Donation.html), a volunteer organization developed by employees of Inland Regional Center, that strives to support the needs and independence of individuals with developmental disabilities in the San Bernardino and Riverside County area.
