Alice Selby Nelson
Alice Selby Nelson, 87, passed away January 14, 2013, at her home in Yucaipa, California with her grand-daughter by her side. Born Alice Selby Tyer, October 5, 1925 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was a resident of San Bernardino County for over 43 years, with 36 of those in Yucaipa. She also has lived in Washington and Alaska where she had fond memories.
She graduated from nursing school in 1949. After a long career as an RN, she retired from Pomona Valley Community Hospital where she was a floor nurse, head nurse, and a departmental supervisor in the emergency room. After retiring she went back to work as an RN in a private practice. After ending her career in the medical field, she enjoyed many years as a volunteer reading to the blind on the radio.
She loved golf and was a member of the Redlands Country Club for over 30 years where she met many great friends. She had a love for animals, especially cats, and her hobbies were working crossword puzzles daily, cross stitch, painting, and traveling. She was a very classy lady who loved classical music and going to the symphony.
She is survived by her brother Don Tyer Jr. from Louisiana, sister Carolyn Conway from Texas, four nieces, three nephews, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years Frank Roy Nelson, her step-daughter Sharon Fitzgerald, whom she loved and raised as her own, father Donald Tyer, and mother Ruth Selby.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Yucaipa Animal Placement Society and the Redlands Community Hospital Hospice program.
As per her wishes, there will be no services held.
