Ramona Woodward Obituary

RAMONA MARIE WOODWARD Age 88, of Tualatin, Oregon, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, due to health complications has passed away at home on March 22, 2013. She leaves behind to mourn her husband of 60 years, Lee Woodward; 2 children, Emily and Stephen Woodward and 3 grandsons, Greg Garrett and Joshua Watson, along with many nieces and nephews. Ramona was born Dec. 31, 1924 into the Desert Cahuilla Nation from the Torres Martinez Reservation in Thermal, CA. She was one of the last true speakers of the native Cahuilla language. She was named after her grandmother Ramona Lubo whose murdered husband by a white man compelled author Helen Hunt Jackson to write the book "Ramona", in hopes to inspire Early Californians to have "compassion" for California Native Americans during the California Gold Rush era. As a young adult Ramona worked & lived in Los Angeles, CA where she met and later married her husband Lee Woodward of Oregon. Ramona was a woman of great strength and vitality and will be greatly missed. Graveside service will be held on April 13, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., Toro Cemetery on the Torres-Martinez Reservation; lunch to follow at the Torres-Martinez Tribal Hall, 66725 Martinez Rd, Thermal, CA. "Nesun tav'eh, eh hiwnyashna achakwen paiy en teew-nem". (My heart is at peace, may you stay in a good way and I will see you another dawn).
