Janet Ruddy Obituary

JANET MARIE KANE RUDDY Janet Marie Kane Ruddy was born on April 3, 1918, in Scranton, Pennsylvania to John Kane and Agnes McDonnell Kane. She passed away on October 6, 2013 in Temecula. She attended elementary and high schools in Scranton, after which she enrolled at Mercy Training Hospital in Scranton, becoming a registered nurse in 1941. In June 1941 she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was soon commissioned a Second Lieutenant. After Pearl Harbor she spent 43 months in the Pacific. She met her future husband Joseph Ruddy, then a Marine Lieutenant, in Hawaii in 1944. In 1947 she resigned from the Army Nurse Corps after marrying Joseph Ruddy. Her last duty station was the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with the rank of Captain. She first came to Southern California in 1950 when her husband was called back into the Marine Corps during the Korean War. After the Korean War, and several moves, she settled in Riverside in 1957. She worked as a civilian nurse at Norton Air Force Base and her husband taught in the Riverside School District. In 1981, after retiring, she and Joseph built a house in Morongo Valley where she resided until 2012. She had a long time interest in Genealogy and Irish history. She was a member of the National Genealogy Society, the Southern California Genealogy Society, Wyoming Valley Historical Society (Pennsylvania), Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and Westport Historical Society (Ireland). She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a founding member of the Women's War Memorial in Washington D.C. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph and her daughter Mary Ruddy Turner. She is survived by her son Kevin. She was buried with her husband and daughter at Olivewood Cemetery in Riverside. Family wishes to thank Chardonnay Hills Care Home in Temecula for their help and dedication in caring for Janet.

Kevin, I am just seeing this notice...although I do a search from time to time. I remember your mother's kindness to me, her passion for genealogy, her lovely hair and her Chanel 19. I send, though belated, condolences to you...for all of the losses over these years. leslie

Dear Mr. Ruddy, I have just read the obit concerning the long and amazing life of your mother. Please accept my condolences on her loss.
Many years ago I was contacted by your mother regarding mutual genealogy. Our mothers were evidently cousins. The family names were Gerrity/Shannon. My daughter has been very involved with family history and thought perhaps you would have additional information. Thank you for your kind attention to this request at this sad time in your family's life. Mariclare

Kevin, We are so very sorry read about your mothers passing today. I know you took beautiful care of her and loved her deeply. As a Captain in the Army Corp Nursing during World War II, she brought care and comfort to our soldiers. As a loving wife and mother she brought more joy and happiness to Family and Friends. Keep up her fighting Irish Spirit and her devotion to duty. You are part of our Family and cherished always ... God Bless You My Good Friend! Respectfully from the Cisneros Family
