He began as a claims adjuster for the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company and retired in 1992 as Senior Vice-President of the San Francisco Bay Area Commercial Insurance centers. William was accomplished in woodworking; his fine furniture creations and clocks are cherished by family and friends. A better woodworker than golfer, William enjoyed many years of playing with the Hacker group at Widgi Creek Golf Club, especially the rounds with his favorite buddies. After he and his wife Nancy moved to Bend in 1995, he began downhill skiing at age 60 and loved the beauty of early morning runs at Mt. Bachelor. In addition to his wife Nancy, he is survived by daughters Suzanne Searles (Robert) of Newport Beach, CA; Kathleen Lowe of Riverside, CA; son John of San Francisco, CA; grand-daughters Shelby, Jamison and Isabelle Searles of Newport Beach, CA; granddaughter Makenzie, and grandson J. Kellen Lowe of Riverside, CA. He is also survived by his sisters Joanna Hersman of Riverside, CA and Patricia McMillan of Temecula, CA. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to many, William will be deeply missed and long remembered for his charm and quick wit. As he wished, cremation has occurred, and William's family will hold a private memorial service in California at a later date. A celebration of his life for friends in Bend will also take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Humane Society of Central Oregon or to a charity of your choice would be most appreciated. Deschutes Memorial Chapel in Bend is proud to serve the family.
