Hazel Ransom Ackles

HAZEL RANSOM ACKLES December 16, 1919 - December 14, 2012 Hazel, a longtime resident of Riverside, passed away peacefully at Sunrise at Canyon Crest Reminiscence Cottage, surrounded by her loving caregivers of almost 7 years. The daughter of Edward Leroy Grigsby and Hazel Grace Grigsby, was born in Long Beach, California, the oldest of 7 children and the only daughter. Growing up during the depression, Hazel helped with cooking, gardening and caring for her 6 brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers John, Terry, Jay and Edward Grigsby. Hazel loved to cook and entertain. She learned how to cook while growing up, cooked for cowboys during roundup on a working cattle ranch in Arizona and her home was always warm and welcoming for her family and friends, especially during the holidays. During the 1950's, Hazel was one of the first postmasters in North Arizona. She served at Cameron Trading Post, which was located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Cameron was built by the Richardson Family and became a stopping off point for visitors traveling to the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert. She loved nature and owned a wholesale nursery in Deer Valley, Arizona. In the early 1960's, the family moved to Corona, California. There, she owned and operated Simms Flower Shop for many years. During that time, she met and married John Ackles who owned Tri Co Disposal in Mira Loma, California. They were married for almost 32 years before John's death on January 16, 2000. Even with the tragic effects of Alzheimers disease, Hazel remained the incredibly beautiful, glamorous and loving woman that we will always remember. Up until the last few months of her life, she continued to go to the hairdresser, always had her makeup on and liked to be elegantly dressed. But more importantly, she truly was a beautiful person inside and out, and she will be greatly missed. Hazel is survived by her daughter Linda Richardson and grandson Eric Richardson; daughter Lisa Chan Amaral; Joe Amaral; granddaughters Nicole Parmagian, Crista Chan, Jennifer Amaral and Pamela Amaral; great grandchildren Nathan and Vivian Parnagian; stepdaughter Nannette Sherman and family. She is also survived by her brother William Grigsby and his wife Paula Grigsby and brother Don Grigsby. Services were held at Riverside National Cemetery on December 27, 2012.
