Joel Kinsey French Jr.(1923 - 2013)

JOEL KINSEY FRENCH, JR. Age 90 1/2 , of Highgrove, CA, passed away on October 25, 2013 in Grand Terrace from terminal cancer. He was born on April 25, 1923 in Craven Co., North Carolina to Joel K. French & Sarah West. As a young boy, Papa worked on the farm from sun up to sun down and would shoot frogs with his dad for breakfast. He completed High school where he enjoyed playing basketball. He recounted his first hand experience of the Great Depression. Papa was married to Faye Hill in 1946 and Lucille Vasquez on August 8, 1965 in Riverside, Ca. Papa was a World War II veteran in the Army from 1942-1946 as an Engineer and Shipping and Receiving Checker and earned APT Campaign Medal with 2 bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze star, a Good Conduct and Victory Medal. He worked as Manager of Safeway in Southern California the majority of his career, then worked as a Salesman for Hagman's Medical Supply until retirement in 1992. Papa lived in New Bern & Dover, North Carolina until 1942. After the service he moved to Wilmington, NC until 1954. Huntington Beach, California was where he first came to CA, until 1960. Then he resided in Grand Terrace, Highgrove and Yucaipa, CA. Papa enjoyed going to Food Connection, Starbucks, Stater Bros and Wal-Mart as his daily routine. He touched many lives & made many friends through those establishments. Papa was a witty man who loved to get you thinking and tell jokes to catch you off guard. He loved to make people smile and will forever be remembered by his sweet boyish smile. He will also forever be remembered by his never-ending disposition to make someone feel loved, appreciated & important. Papa is survived by children, James (Robin) of Virginia, Donna (Richard) of Yucaipa, CA, Al, Danny (Nita), and Jerry of Costa Mesa, Ca; grandchildren, Crystal, Raina, Richard, Jagger, Alexis, Lucas, Mandy, Larry, Deena, Marty, and Laurie; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Krista, Regan, Renee, Shaina, Quaid, Tierra, Reagan, Zaley, Harper, Jusin, Levi, Riley, Eden, and Ryan; great great grandchildren, Chevy, and Chance; siblings, Bobbie and Ella; niece: Diana; cousin, Blanche; friends, Teri, Sally, Judy, Ranelle, Tammy, Carrie, Georgia, Aaron, Mia, Susan. He was predeceased by wife, Lucille; son, Gary; siblings, Anne, Ronald, Edward, Carl; and his loyal companions, Butchy Boy, Duffy & Susie. Services: Inland Memorial Mortuary on November 1st, 2013 at 12:45 pm. Graveside service at 2:00 pm. at Hermosa Gardens Cemetery in Colton, CA with reception to follow at Food Connection of Grand Terrace at 2:30 pm.
