PHILLIP HENRY PETERSON of Riverside, passed away after a brief illness on December 16, 2012. He was 85 years old. Phil was born September 8, 1927 in Morris, Minnesota, the third of six children, into the family of Henry and Mary Peterson. As a young child, he worked on the farms where the family lived and later went to live and work with his uncle and aunt, Philip and Lena Marie Gagnon. The extensive use of working horses rather than more expensive motorized equipment would be the beginning of Phil's life long love of horses. He entered the United States Army
in November 1945 and retired honorably, as a major, in June 1965. During his time in the military, he served as a forward observer and battery commander in the Korean Conflict
and was held as a prisoner of war from 1950-53. Following military service, he worked for Kaiser Steel in Fontana, Skadron Business College in San Bernardino, the Chino Police Department, and operated a lawn and tree trimming service. Ultimately, he went to work for the United States Postal Service, retiring again in 1992. Phil was predeceased by his parents; sisters Aloris Kinsella and Madeline Casper; brother Myron Peterson; and first wife Gloria. He is survived by his wife, Alyce Peterson; daughters Cynthia Swaim (Randy), Denise Peery, Wendy Peterson, Sherry Parker, and Barbara Robinson (Rob); step-daughters Kathryn Walters (Jim) and Karyn Amen (Jonny); sister Barbara Peterson (Timothy Ondahl); brother Jerome Peterson (Lori); fourteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and aunt Lena Marie Gagnon. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary at 7944 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside. Visitation will be held at the mortuary from 5-8pm on Sunday, December 30.
