Claudia Schmidt Obituary

CLAUDIA MARIA SCHMIDT Claudia slipped away quietly at her parent\'s home in Riverside on January 7th, 2011 at the age of 49 after a long, brave battle with leukemia. She had been living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the past ten years where she was Associate Professor of Philosophy at Marquette University. Claudia was born and raised in Riverside. In 1981 she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from UCR. She went on to earn an MA degree in Religious Studies from UCSB (1985), a Ph.D. in Historical Theology from the Berkeley Graduate Theological Union (1992) and a second Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Iowa (1999.) Dr. Schmidt taught philosophy, philosophy of history and courses on the philosophers Immanuel Kant and David Hume. Her published output includes a comprehensive scholarly work on Hume\'s writings entitled "David Hume - Reason in History" (published in 2003.) Additional interests included the works of Jane Austen, dance, ballet and theatre performances and music ranging from Gregorian chant to Robert Plant. A beloved family member, Claudia was the daughter of Ada and Hartland Schmidt. She is also survived by her brother Steven, sister-in-law Rong-Huey Liu and nieces Autumn and Aurora (also of Riverside.) Claudia has uncles, aunts and cousins in California, Texas and Minnesota. Claudia\'s family members are grateful for the care and kindness shown to each of them by the home care staff of Companion Hospice. A private funeral service is planned followed by public memorial services in Milwaukee and Riverside. In lieu of flowers Claudia requested that memorial gifts be given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (1311 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605), St. Mark\'s Episcopal Church (2618 N. Hackett Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53211) where Claudia was an active member, or to her first church home, the First Congregational Church of Riverside (PO Box 1648, Riverside, CA 92502.)

Dearest Claudia, I will never forget the many golden hours of those long lost days of youth: baking a gingerbread house together... being fairies in A Midsummer Nights Dream... writing notes to each other both in Elvish script and Dwarvish runes... singing our favorites songs from Tolkien to the tunes you composed... and our endless "Society for Putting Things on Top of Things" doodles during algebra. You were a loyal and constant friend, cheerful and funny, and your quiet, compassionate intelligence was a light when all other lights went out. I am so deeply saddened to know that you have passed out of this world, to the great loss and sorrow of those who knew you. So long, my sweet friend! I will see you on that further shore.

Claudia was a brilliant student of mine many years ago and as we stayed in touch over the years I was privileged to watch her grow intellectually and find a place in the world. Spiritually, emotionally, and well as intellectually she was a remarkable person.

Claudia and I used to discuss Hume at Alterra coffee. I shall miss those meetings with her. She was a wonderful young woman and colleague.

Her colleagues at Marquette learned a lot from her -- not only about Hume, Kant, and history, but also from how she displayed the human qualities of listening to others, careful deliberation, and especially the gentle and peaceful strength of her last years. She will be missed.

I have known Claudia since she started kindergarten with my sister Janis and until she graduated UCR. Claudia was always incredibly well respected as not only one of the smartest women in her classes but always as one of the kindest. Claudia was always quiet and extremely thoughtful and kind. I feel a deep sense of loss at her passing.
